US Citizens Killed by ICE Agents in Minnesota--East Lyme Reacts

The East Lyme DTC condemns, in the strongest possible terms, the killings of civilians by ICE agents. It is hard to put into words our anger, grief, fear and exhaustion that many of us are carrying after the second unjustifiable killing of a US citizen.

This is not acceptable! This is not what is supposed to happen in our country, a nation of laws and standards and morals.

While the investigation is just beginning, videos of the killing of Alex have been shown widely on social media. The videos show Alex trying to assist a protester who had been pushed down to the ground by ICE agents, before being pushed down himself, beaten and shot. The US Administration has begun a counter-narrative to try to characterize Alex as a domestic terrorist. He was not, he was simply exercising his Constitutional right to assemble and to protest against something he didn’t support.

His killing is the second this month in Minnesota, following the murder of Renee Good inside her vehicle. Both were behaving peacefully. Both lives leave behind family, friends, communities, and many, many people around the world who are mourning their loss.

An Indivisible Rally was held earlier this month (see photographs below) to protest the behavior of ICE against peaceful US citizens.

The ELDTC will hold a discussion at our regularly scheduled Thursday night monthly meeting. We will talk through our feelings, share our views, and open a dialog about the appropriate response that a small community organization like ours can have. The meeting will be held at 7 pm at the Niantic Community Center (Society Road) on January 29. Members, associate members, and non-members who wish to share in this discussion are welcome to join.
